In the shamanic world the act of burning incense has a different meaning in relation to western customs and traditions. The Shaman does not use only incense to puring up spaces or to contribute to a pleasant atmosphere at home, but rather to alter one's state of consciousness with the aim of traveling in other dimensions and thus mediating between them. For the Shaman this often aims to drive away evil beings and diseases and to balance and heal the person in need of help. In a trance state, the Shaman then reveals the cause of the illness. Among the native american peoples, white sage was considered a sacred plant able to drive away all forms of negative energy from environments and the etheric field of people.
